What is the Working Principle of the Radiator?

Yes, the four-stroke internal combustion engine powering the large majority of the estimated 1.4 billion cars on the road today has been around since the mid 19th century. Even though the engine has remained virtually unchanged, there have been many devices added to automobiles to improve different aspects of performance. One of the devices contributing to improved emissions performance is the catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter is a large metal box located between the engine and the tailpipe of a car. It has an intake pipe connected to the engine and an output pipe connected to the exhaust system. The inside of the catalytic converter is a dense honeycomb of ceramic and is coated with catalysts. This catalyst covered honeycomb takes harmful gases like carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon produced by the engine and splits the gases into separate atoms. These atoms are then rearranged into harmless compounds like nitrogen, water, and carbon dioxide and sent out through the exhaust system. This process reduces toxic emissions that affect air quality and are responsible for environmental issues like smog and acid rain.

Catalytic converters should last the life of a vehicle but can fail or lose effectiveness if they become dirty or clogged. Some of the common symptoms of bad catalytic converters include:

There are a lot of people out there who try to use water in place of antifreeze when they don't have any other options. These people more than likely live in warm clients that never get below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and therefore feel that the water will never freeze. Although this may be tempting, it is definitely not something we would recommend - let's talk about why.

First, let's define what coolant or antifreeze is. It is a 50/50 mix of water and additives which help to increase the water's freezing and boiling points. It also contains several additives that help protect the engine from corrosion. While you drive your vehicle, it relies on coolant to essentially regulate the temperature of the engine and prevent it from overheating.

When your vehicle is low on coolant, typically due to a leak somewhere within the cooling system, engine damage can quickly occur due to overheating. This can lead you to expensive repairs bills, something you want to avoid. This is why coolant is so important and maintaining the system with the proper fluids is vital.

So when you hear a sound that is off, you may be alarmed and unsure if your vehicle needs a repair or not. Depending on the sound, your vehicle could be letting you know that something is amiss. A screeching noise under the hood can indicate a worn serpentine belt or a faulty engine pulley. The screeching sound will be respective, almost like you hear the noise every time the belt goes around once. Belts are extremely important and will need to be replaced at the first sign of wear, because a broken belt means a broken down vehicle.
A hissing noise under the hood can indicate a broken hose. A broken hose can be the source of a fluid leak, which can lead to major issues depending on which fluid is leaking. Get this looked at right away.

Is it Safe to Drive with Your TPMS Warning Light On?

The TPMS warning light, seen above, is your vehicle's Tire Pressure Monitoring System warning light. When this light turns on, your vehicle is letting you know that it has detected that one or more of your tires has low tire pressure.

Proper tire inflation is important for a number of reasons. It is vital for proper handling, longer tire life, optimal fuel efficiency, and increasing your ability to drive safely in all weather conditions.

You see this warning light come on and wonder, is it safe to drive with the TPMS warning light on? If the light has just turned on and you need to find your way to our shop or to an air pump, you should be fine. However, continuing to drive your car with the light on is not safe. Here's why!

When you drive your vehicle with low tire pressure, you are causing your tire to wear down excessively and prematurely. This is eventually going to cost you a new tire much sooner than you would have if you had the proper tire inflation. You are also hindering your ability to properly control and turn your vehicle, which can be dangerous on the road. Low tire pressure also puts you at risk for a tire blowout and can negatively impact your vehicle's tread, making you more likely to hydroplane in the event of driving on wet roads.

If the TPMS light turns on, the first thing you should do is check the tire pressure of all four tires. The proper inflation will be listed in your vehicle's owner's manual. How to Test Your Car Battery

Tips for Taking Better Care of Your Vehicle

Most car owners are familiar with their regular vehicle services, such as the oil change and vehicle inspections. While these services are very important, preventative maintenance is also needed in order to ensure that your vehicle runs smoothly and to help you avoid major repairs.

A poorly maintained vehicle won't run well and will have much lower fuel efficiency. It will also be at risk for breakdowns, major issues, and more needed repairs. Staying current with your vehicle's scheduled maintenance recommendations in the owner's manual, checking fluid levels, and changing the fluids and filters periodically will actually prolong the life of the brakes, engine, transmission, and cooling system.

Here are some of our tips for taking better care of your vehicle and staying current with preventative maintenance:

Never miss a motor oil interval!
Oil filters need to be changed regularly as well
Transmission fluid exchange every 50,000 miles or so
Coolant change every 2-3 years
