A clicking sound during a tight U-turn can be easy to miss at first because it usually happens only when the steering wheel is turned far to one side. You may hear it while leaving a parking space, circling through a small lot, or making a sharp turn at low speed.
The fact that the noise appears during tight steering angles gives us an important clue. Several steering and suspension parts move farther during those turns, but one driveline component is especially well known for creating a repeated clicking sound when it starts wearing.
A Worn CV Joint Is a Common Cause
Front-wheel-drive and many all-wheel-drive vehicles use CV axles to send engine power to the wheels while allowing the suspension and steering to move. Each axle has constant velocity joints that can operate at an angle while the wheels turn.
The outer CV joint works through its greatest angle during a tight turn. When that joint becomes worn, it can produce a repeated click, click, click that speeds up as the vehicle moves faster.
You may hear the noise more clearly when applying light throttle through the turn. The extra drivetrain load puts more force through the worn joint, making the clicking easier to reproduce.
A Torn CV Boot Can Lead to Joint Damage
CV joints rely on grease for lubrication and are protected by flexible rubber boots. If a boot splits, grease can escape while water and road debris get inside.
A torn boot doesn't always make noise right away. There is often a period where the joint still feels normal even though lubrication is being lost.
At our shop, one thing we look for is grease sprayed around the inside of the wheel, suspension, or surrounding components. That can show us a boot has been leaking for some time. If the joint has already started clicking, replacing only the boot generally will not correct the wear inside the joint.
The Direction of the Turn Can Help
Drivers sometimes notice the clicking is louder when turning one direction than the other. That detail can help us narrow down which axle or joint is under the greatest load when the noise appears.
For example, a worn outer CV joint may become more noticeable as the vehicle's weight shifts and the axle operates at a sharper angle. The loudest side is not always enough by itself to identify the failed joint, so we still inspect both axles.
A road test in a controlled area is useful because we can compare left and right circles, light acceleration, and coasting. The way the noise changes between those conditions tells us more than hearing one click while pulling into the shop.
Wheel Bearings Usually Sound Different
Wheel bearing problems can also become louder while turning, but the sound is normally different from a CV joint click. A worn bearing often creates a humming, growling, or rumbling noise that changes as vehicle weight shifts from one side to the other.
The sound may continue at highway speed and does not necessarily require the steering wheel to be near full lock. We check for bearing play and listen for roughness rather than assuming every turn-related noise is coming from the axle.
An inspection also gives us a chance to look at the hub, tire, and suspension parts around that wheel. Several problems can create noise during turning, especially if the vehicle recently hit a pothole or curb.
Steering and Suspension Parts Can Click Too
Tie rod ends, ball joints, strut mounts, sway bar links, and control arm bushings all move as the wheels steer and the body shifts. A loose or worn part can produce a pop or click when the load changes.
These noises are often less rhythmic than a CV joint. Instead of repeatedly clicking through the whole U-turn, you may hear one pop as the steering reaches a certain angle or as the suspension loads and unloads.
Loose splash shields, brake hardware, and even something contacting the tire at full steering lock can also make a clicking or scraping sound. That is why we look at the full corner of the vehicle rather than replacing an axle based only on the description.
Do Not Ignore a CV Joint That Is Getting Louder
A CV joint that has started clicking has already developed internal wear. It may continue operating for some time, but the noise generally becomes more noticeable as the joint deteriorates.
If wear becomes severe enough, the joint can eventually lose the ability to transfer power properly. A failed axle can leave the vehicle unable to move even though the engine and transmission are still working.
Regular maintenance can catch cracked CV boots before the joint starts making noise. Once clicking is present, though, we check the complete axle and compare the cost and condition of replacing the joint versus the full axle assembly.
